The Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (TBPELS) has recently updated the requirements for professional engineer (PE) license renewal and continuing education. These changes aim to ensure that licensed engineers remain up-to-date with the latest industry standards and ethical practices.
To renew a PE license in Texas, engineers must follow these steps:
Annual Renewal Fee: Engineers must pay the required annual renewal fee before the expiration date of their license.
Late Renewal: If the license has expired for 90 days or less, engineers can renew by paying the annual renewal fee and a late renewal fee. For licenses expired between 90 days and two years, the renewal fee and late fee for each delinquent year must be paid2.
Reinstatement: If a license has been expired for more than two years, engineers must reapply and meet all the original licensure requirements, including examination.
Texas requires professional engineers to complete 15 hours of continuing education (CE) every renewal cycle. At least one hour must be dedicated to ethics. The CE activities can include:
Educational Courses: Workshops, seminars, and conferences relevant to the practice of engineering.
Self-Study: Up to five hours of self-directed study on topics related to engineering practice.
Online Classes/Videos: Free or paid online courses that provide professional development hours (PDHs).
Engineers must keep detailed records of their CE activities, including certificates of completion and summaries of self-study topics. A percentage of renewals are audited to ensure compliance with the CE requirements1.
The TBPELS emphasizes the importance of these requirements to maintain high standards of professional practice and public safety. Engineers are encouraged to stay informed about any changes to the renewal and CE processes by visiting the TBPELS website or contacting their office directly.
